On Saturday, June 8, Puja Tomar, often referred to as the “cyclone,” won the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), making history as the first Indian winner. With a dominant victory over Amanda dos Santos of Brazil in her debut, the 30-year-old mixed martial artist wrote history. In addition to making Indians proud, Tomar’s victory will pave the way for opportunities that were before unconsidered.
My aim is to demonstrate to the world that Indian fighters are not defeated. We’re climbing to the very top! We are not about to give up! We’ll soon win a UFC championship!” after her victory, Tomar stated.
She previously created history when she signed up for the UFC as the first-ever Indian female fighter and won her first fight there.
On Saturday, Tomar and Santos engaged in a frenzied three-round match, but Tomar prevailed 30-27, 27-30, and 29-28 to take the lead in the competition. Santos was defeated by Tomar at UFC Louisville via split decision.
