The Attorney General’s office wrote a letter to the Red River Trust on Tuesday, requesting information on the company’s plans for the property and if it complies any North Dakota Corporate Farming Laws requirements .
Six lands in Pembina County were bought by a trust with connections to Bill Gates.
Although there is no violation of North Dakota law in the transfer of ownership to the trust, the buyers will need to demonstrate that there is no contravention of corporate farming laws.
Commissioner Goehring stated that, “I’ve gotten a big earful on this from clear across the state, it’s not even from that neighborhood. Those people are upset, but there are others that are just livid about this.”
However, many people believe they are being taken advantage of by the rich who purchase land in North Dakota but may not necessarily share the state’s values. Commissioner Goehring claims that selling land to a billionaire is neither illegal nor unlawful.
