Shoaib Malik, a former captain of Pakistan, has encouraged Babar Azam to step down from the captaincy position since his team is about to quit the 2017 T20 World Cup in the group stage. Although Babar received a lot of appreciation from Shoaib for his batting role, he was advised to give up the captaincy in order to concentrate on his batting, which will take additional strain off his shoulders. Pakistan’s encounter with Canada on Tuesday is a “do-or-die” game; a loss would mean early elimination and the end of their hopes of finishing in the top two.
“I’ve been pleading with you to step down from captaincy for a while now. You are a class player, and you can only demonstrate this to your classmates when you have no other obligations. It will benefit Babar if he refrains from taking on the captaincy, according to Shoaib Malik.
“You brought Saim Ayub in because people were always talking about Babar and Rizwan’s strike rates. Why were you attempting to increase your strike rate yesterday when it was a 120 chase? The stage was ready in every way. If your brain does activate in these kinds of circumstances as a batter and a leader, when will it do so? Today, I feel compelled to state that we should no longer support this team’s core in the Twenty20 International format,” Shoaib said.
If Pakistan’s match against Canada on Tuesday ends badly, they could be eliminated from the T20 World Cup. Given that both India and the USA stand to gain, even a washout may find their prospects impacted.
With one match remaining, Pakistan would be eliminated from the group stage if they lose to Canada. Canada will also have a strong chance of making it to the Super Eight thanks to this outcome. A washout, however, would limit their potential to just five points, meaning they would require assistance to advance to the Super Eight.
